Your Life Affirming Bikram Yoga Journey Starts Here

Ironclad Tips For Every Beginner

Our instructors are pros at working with new students.

Here’s what you can expect from our team on your first visit.

Clear Verbal Cues

We encourage new students to start with our Bikram 90 class. The 90 minute format gives our instructors time to explain exactly when and how to get into position. We offer several posture options, each one increasing in intensity and difficulty. Get comfortable in the first option before moving into more advanced versions.

Adjustments to Prevent Injury

Correct body alignment prevents injuries during your Bikram practice. Listening to instructions and watching your body in the mirrors always helps. From time to time, you will not be able to see your position and alignment. We give you tips and adjustments during your practice. You get the most out of each posture without injuring yourself.

Encouragement to Start Where You Are

If you’ve never practiced hot yoga before, your first success will be staying in the room for the full class. Acclimating to the heat while maintaining your focus is difficult. Begin where you feel comfortable. Your number one goal is to understand the basics and learn the postures. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you’ll be ready to push yourself for more.

Get the most from your first Bikram practice

We have the BEST community! Everyone will make you feel comfortable and at home in our yoga studio. Still, if you want the most from your practice, here are some tips on being comfortable and getting things right from the start.

time

Arrive Early

Bikram Yoga helps relieve stress. Don’t stress trying to get to class! Arrive 15 – 20 minutes early. That will give you time to sign in using our ipads, complete any forms for your first visit, and settle into class.

Yoga Gear

You don’t have to buy expensive gear. The studio is hot, so wear breathable clothes. Wear coverage that clings to comfortably get into postures. You’ll want a mat, a mat towel (so you don’t slip) and a hand towel for your sweat after class.

water

Drink Lots of Water

We keep it hot, hot, hot. You’ll want to drink lots of water prior to class. During class, wait for instructor cues to take sips. Have plenty of water ready for after class, and guzzle it down. You need to replace all the liquid you just sweat.

food

Hold the Food

You want to be fueled and ready to go before class. However, practicing on a full stomach is a no-go. We suggest not eating at least 2 hours before class. That way you’re not revisited by your meal while you’re in rabbit pose.

bare

Bare Your feet

We practice in bare feet. So, you’ll want to remove your shoes when you arrive. That keeps our floors clean for your next visit. We have shoe cubbies for storage right at the front desk.

med

Meditate

We’re a vibrant yoga community, so we love to build relationships. We ask that you keep your visiting in the lobby area. The studio is a place of quiet reflection and meditation.

phone

Unplug

Classes are a No Cell Phone zone. To truly focus on your practice, we eliminate distractions in the studio. Cell phones can be left in the lockers for safe keeping.

unplug

Start in the Back

Beginners should start at the back of the class. The heat is not as intense in the back of the room. AND you can watch the students who have been practicing for longer from the back.

I'm a beginner so when I hear those cues every time I go, I find all the modifications or adjustments I can do, and each class I learn something new.

I remember when I first started Bikram. You go in there thinking it's going to be a breeze because it's not high intensity. I think every first-timer is shocked at just how challenging it is. But 90 minutes later, you feel like a million bucks. That's why I keep coming back.

I saw yogis who were really flexible, and I was nervous to go because I felt like I wasn't good enough to do it. Trying yoga for the first time, you have to be willing to step outside your comfort zone. Be willing to make mistakes. If you do something consistently, you'll get better at it. Every single day you'll see progression.

After struggling through it, about an hour after class, I felt so amazing. Then I was addicted.

Get Results

Now that you’re ready for your first class, what happens next? Your body is ready for results.

After your first class, you’re likely to be sore. You have awakened muscles you are not used to using. Your body is breaking down tissue and rebuilding muscle. As this part of your body awakens, other stiffness and pain from old injuries starts to disappear.

Bikram practice is a moving meditation. Focusing your mind and energy on the poses frees your mind of anxiety, fear and negativity. Your practice may release emotions you have locked away. When you’re done, you’ll have a mental clarity you may not have experienced in a long time.

Bikram Yoga is a major stress reliever. It’s like a refueling for the soul. At the end of class, you will be exhausted. After your practice, you’ll feel stronger and more flexible. You’ll sleep better and wake up with more energy to give the world your best.
